Open Auditions for “Driving Miss Daisy

Freehold, NJ - Center Players, the downtown area’s resident theater company, will be holding open auditions for its Signature Series presentation of Driving Miss Daisy, written by Alfred Whry, and directed by Bernice Garfield-Szita.  Auditions will be held on Monday May 5th, 7:30 – 9:30 PM and Saturday May 10th, 4:00 – 6:00 PM.  All auditions will be held at Center Playhouse, 35 South Street, Freehold [corner of Mechanic Street and South Street (a.k.a. Route 79)].  The show will open Friday July 25 and run 5 weekends through Sunday August 24, 2008.  An audition appointment is recommended but not required.

The Story:  Set in mid-century Atlanta, Georgia from 1948-1973, Driving Miss Daisy, winner of the 1988 Pulitzer Prize, tells the story of an elderly matron, Daisy Werthan and her chauffeur, Hoke Coleburn.  At first Daisy is none too happy about being forced to rely on a black man.  But Hoke gradually wins her over and during the 25 year span of the play, the two develop a deep rooted respect and affection.

Seeking Actors for the Following Roles:

  • Daisy Werthan (ages 72-97) a strong willed retired school teacher.
  • Hoke Coleburn (ages 60-85) a Southern black man with great sensitivity, intelligence and integrity.
  • Boolie Werthan (ages 40-65) Daisy’s son, a successful Atlanta businessman.
